Cumbria Wood Fuel School

CAfS ran the Cumbria Wood Fuel School on behalf of Cumbria Woodlands from April 2012 until March 2013.

The Wood Fuel School provided training, business mentoring, and information for woodland owners producing wood fuel, established wood fuel suppliers, or those with aspirations to become a wood fuel supplier within the county, with the aim of supporting and growing the sector in Cumbria.

105 delegates attended training events and courses including introductory events, LANTRA accredited courses, evening events looking at Drying Wood Fuel, and bespoke on-site training on Safety in the Wood Fuel Sector.

Working with local industry experts, 14 individuals received 30 days of free and heavily subsidised business mentoring on diverse subjects such as wood fuel production, business support, website and e‐commerce, planning advice, and funding.

Six businesses took advantage of free quality assurance membership of the HETAS and Woodsure scheme.

The project was part of the wider Rural Skills Cumbria Programme, funded by DEFRA through the RDPE Programme and managed by the Solway, Border & Eden and Fells & Dales LEADER Local Action Groups.  It was also supported by the Lake District National Park Authority and Britain’s Energy Coast.
